Activity on the Cartergate site has been ongoing for a number of years to prepare it for future development, most recently an archaeological survey was completed in March 2010.
The site will be important in providing a ‘gateway’ development at the western end of the town centre which will link through to St James’ Square and the rest of the town centre beyond. The intention for Cartergate is to provide a high quality development which includes new office space, a hotel, cafes, shops and leisure facilities alongside remodelled public realm. An important part of the project is the need to make pedestrian and cycling routes into the town centre from the residential areas to the west more attractive and this development gives the opportunity to look at ways of making the centre more accessible from this direction.
