To view information on the Archaeological dig
|
The Cartergate development site lies on the edge of the modern core of Grimsby, just west of St James' Church where it is bounded by Cartergate, Chantry Lane, the new course of Deansgate to the east and the railway to the south. It seems likely that during the medieval period this area was on the edge of the medieval town and previous trial trenching by Humberside Archaeology in 1994 supports a degree of medieval activity on the site. These trial trenches presented some interesting results with the majority of items being from the medieval period, although there where earlier items recorded including a pit of probable prehistoric date and a layer containing shreds of Romano-British pottery. Trenches either side of Chantry Lane recorded evidence of occupation commencing in the 13th and 14th centuries. Redevelopment of the Cartergate site presented the opportunity to carry out additional archaeological investigations and in summer 2009 a preliminary dig was carried out with the second stage taking place between January and March 2010. The work was carried out by Entec and Pre-Construct Archaeology and all the dig updates can be found below. |
